Want to know how our area came to be as it is? Ever wondered about the people who used to live here? The two Books of Addiscombe by the Canning & Clyde Road Residents Association and Friends are A4 hard-backed, lavishly illustrated books packed with information and photos.

The first Book of Addiscombe looks at the Addiscombe area before Croydon expanded with the arrival of the railways. We look at the early history of the railways and other transport, how the roads were built up, where the bricks came from, what life was like, local heroes, schools, some local churches, entertainment, profound effect of World War II and much more. Over 50 contributors help to make this a fascinating history.

The Book of Addiscombe is available for loan and reference at Croydon libraries. It is out of print

The Book of Addiscombe Volume II grew out of people’s responses to the first book. With over 100 contributors there is a lot on people’s personal memories of growing up in Addiscombe, how the geology affected the area, local businesses, more on entertainment, transport, sport, local churches.

The Book of Addiscombe Volume II is available for loan and reference at Croydon Libraries. It is out of print.
